Why a Back-UPS may beep once in awhile or beep every few seconds

Solution

Anytime a Back-UPS determines that the input power is not safe for your computer equipment, it will transfer to battery power and the UPS will begin to beep. The unit will beep once every 5 seconds for as long as it remains on battery. If your utility voltage is chronically low, it is advisable to raise the issue with your local utility company. It may be possible to adjust your Back UPS so that it will accept a lower input voltage, thus preventing the UPS from constantly operating on battery power. However, occasional transfers to battery should not be a matter for concern and should be regarded as normal operation. The UPS is just trying to provide safe, reliable power to your sensitive equipment.

Solution:
On the rear of most Back-UPS model UPSs (see owner's manual) there are 4 dip switches. Dip switch #2 and #3 are for adjusting the transfer voltage level. (Transfer voltage level is the voltage point at which the UPS will go to battery operation.) By default (both 2 and 3 in the "down" position), the UPS will go to battery at 103 volts rms. If you move #2 up, then it will go to battery at 98 volts rms. If you move #3 up only, the unit will go to battery at 93 volts rms. If you move both #2 and #3 up, the UPS will not go to battery until the input voltage falls below 88 volts rms. Having your computer equipment operate off of 88volts or lower should not be a long term solution. In general, most computer equipment can run off voltage that low, but its not good for the equipment in the long term. If you have to operate the UPS with both dip switches in the "up" position in order for it to stay On Line and not On Battery, then you should have the power problem corrected by your local utility company.
